We are pleased to introduce Derek Patton (Aka Deke), ROI’s Director Of Client Services at ROI Research On Investment. Sometimes it takes big changes and big moves to find your path. Get to know how this fun-loving Scotsman got into the world of Economic Development and what it means to him.

Can you tell us more about yourself and how you discovered the world of economic development?

After moving from Scotland to Canada, I went back to school with the aim of pursuing a well-meaning vocation with a lasting impact. The day after I finished university, I joined ROI and discovered that economic development ticked that box for me!

What is your role here at ROI? 

I am primarily responsible for client, contract, and campaign management. But the role is somewhat multifaceted due to the experience I now possess, so includes other aspects such as business development and in-market representation.

What trends are you seeing in the world of economic development? What are clients looking for?

The pandemic period showed the importance of having concerted activity at each step of the funnel in order to have a continuous flow of leads.

Our lead generation campaigns are fantastic for identifying live projects but as inbound slowed, clients realized the need for a fully developed lead nurturing and follow-up process and that’s why ROI developed Digital Labs. The ROI Digital Labs branch focuses exclusively on digital marketing and lead nurturing so that prospects are engaged at every step of the investor journey.

What are some of the recent client programs you managed that were the most rewarding? Why?

Each client we work with has its own unique proposition and it is always satisfying to complete a program and hand over a final report that we know is going to have inward investment value. However, as a Scotsman, it has been of particular pride to wear the shirt on the field of play for Scottish Development International over the last year.

What does economic development mean to you? 

It gives me the ability to positively impact a community through my work. Knowing that the product we deliver can lead to the enrichment of a region and enhance the social and economic well-being of its citizens is incredibly gratifying.

If there was one thing you wish everyone knew about economic development, what would it be? 

Many people don’t realize how long this process can take. From the initial idea or conversation, through to the research and formation of the plan, to the confirmation and then its ultimate completion, can take years. Of course, we are all impatient for results but they often take a long time to come to fruition.

Do you have an inspirational quote you enjoy? 

I’d rather fall on my art than fall on my arse.

Which song can you listen to all day long? 

Stand by Me – Ben E. King. Pop perfection.

If you could only eat one item for every meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?  

Chicken wings. As long as I had an array of hot sauces to work my way through them.

Which fictional character do you most relate to?   

Not exactly fictional but Larry David.

Cats or dogs (or neither!)? 

Dogs. Without a shadow of doubt. Not even close.
